Dear Tritons.
On Saturday morning, an incident was reported involving a student who was detained by ICE agents. Based on the information available to us, it appears that a few agents were waiting in the parking lot near the Snoqualmie Building and detained and took the student into custody shortly after he arrived on campus.
Unfortunately, there was little that could have been done to prevent this action under the circumstances. However, the person who witnessed the incident responded appropriately by immediately notifying our Security Officer, who then followed established reporting protocols and informed his supervisor.
The college has an official policy for these incidents which can be found here. These protocols apply in situations where ICE agents seek assistance from employees on campus or attempt to access private areas within college facilities. In this particular case, the incident occurred in a public parking lot. Because parking lots are public spaces, the college cannot restrict individuals from being present there unless they are violating applicable laws or college policies.
Based on the information we currently have, we believe this was likely an isolated incident, although we cannot say so with complete certainty. We chose not to communicate sooner because we wanted to gather additional facts following the weekend and avoid creating unnecessary confusion or concern based on incomplete information. Legally, the college cannot obstruct federal agents from carrying out their official business. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates should additional information become available.
Your safety and well-being remain our highest priorities. We know this is a busy week for all of you completing finals and for many of you, the celebration of commencement on Thursday. Please remember that we are here to support you and your success. Please reach out to the Counseling and Wellness Center if you need additional support.
This message is being shared on behalf of Dr. Singh, College President.
Best Regards,
